Arranging sound and silence
To evoke emotion
Akosch Warga, also credited as Ákos Zságer-Varga, is a Hungarian composer, musician and sound artist based in Berlin. Theatre is at the heart of his practice. He specialises in immersive, cinematic music for theatre, using surround sound to envelop the audience and give live performance the scale and atmosphere of a film. Over 26 years, he has composed music for more than 80 theatre productions, spanning drama, puppet theatre and contemporary performance, alongside work in dance, film and electronic music.
His relationship with theatre began in his hometown of Kaposvár, where he grew up watching productions at the Csiky Gergely Theatre. He joined its working life in 1999, initially through sound and live music. That experience of theatre from within continues to inform his approach: composition begins with the script, the director’s vision and the emotional relationships on stage.
His stage work includes collaborations with directors László Keszég, János Mohácsi, Illés Horváth, István Znamenák, Csilla Bereczki, Bence Benkó and Péter Fábián. His credits span theatres in Kaposvár, Miskolc, Szeged, Nyíregyháza and Budapest, as well as Hungarian-language productions in Subotica and Târgu Mureș.
His interest in music’s relationship with the body extends into dance theatre. He contributed music alongside Alexis Cuadrado to Kata Juhász’s Keresztvíz, a movement-based adaptation of Twelfth Night, and composed for her participatory dance production MozgásTér. His experience as a live theatre musician also includes work with Márton Kovács and the Szakértők ensemble.
Alongside his theatre practice, Warga has performed on bass and electronics with Žagar. His solo releases Autonomy, Diversity and Integrity on OAKHI Records bring piano, electronic textures and rhythmic experimentation into a more personal musical setting. His work also extends to film composition and the technical side of moving-image production, including digital imaging and data wrangling.
Across these different forms, his practice connects composition with performance: music shaped by the people, images and movement around it.
Recently, he has been experimenting with software development for musicians and DJs, creating tools he has long wished he had in his own work.
